Contemporary Moral Issues
These are moral issues that relate to government. They illustrate
a lack of adherence to such moral principles as honesty, integrity, and
fidelity to the American people. Politicians seems more committed to raising
money to finance their next election effort than making decisions for the
benefit of the country. Many seem to be "selling" their votes to lobbyists
who are more than willing to make fat contributions to their election funds.
Is it any wonder that many citizens today are disillusioned with government?
There is a significant number of citizens who believe they can do nothing
to control taxes and excessive spending. They have lost faith in government
and believe a government "of the people, for the people, and by the people"
is out of their control.
Abortion is perhaps the most emotionally charged issue there is.
There are those who assert that life begins at the moment of conception. Others
claim that life begins at birth. The government seems to support recreational sex, even
for high school students, and abortions when sex results in pregnancy. Where do you
stand?

It takes almost a million dollars to win a U.S. House seat and several
million dollars to win a Senate seat. How do candidates get this money and where
is their allegiance after receiving it? Corporate and organizational lobbies
give candidates money, host them on extravagant outings, and fly them around
the country and the world. Does this money buy loyalty? If the candidate
needs more money, what do you think?
Congressman George Miller indicated to then Speaker Gingrich, "The
public has lost confidence in government in large part because they do not believe
that decisions are made in their best interest, but rather in the interest
of the highest contributor."
Congress has played fast and loose with budget numbers. Many trust funds
have nothing in them but IOUs that are payable by future tax payers while
the money that should be in the funds has been spent.
The Social Security system is not financially sound. The number of workers
paying into the system is decreasing while the number of people who expect
to receive benefits will increase dramatically. What should be done to
save the system?
The North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) and the Overseas Private
Investment Corporation (OPIC) have resulted in many manufacturing jobs
moving from the United States to developing nations as well as excessive
pollution and child labor abuses. All with the blessings and financial
support of the American people. Here's what you need to know about these programs.
